August 2023

The boys are going to be a year old this month, and the whole family is gathering to mark the occasion. Here. Soon. This would be a good time to have all my ducks in a row, huh?
Yup.

Most of the kitchen remodel got done, but the counters are supposed to go in the same day as people get here, and I can’t hook up the sinks until the next day.
This duck is in the right row, but it’s a straggler.

For months, Mary’s planned to replace the green house deck, which lasted 22 years.  Josh’s schedule opened up and on Monday, he started work. The timing was not good, and when I walked over to say hello, it was a demolition zone. Nails and rotten wood and pointy things everywhere, and there’s going to be two toddlers here in 7 days.
This duck was way out of line.
I didn’t want to. I hadn’t planned to. But I kinda had to, and I got involved.
So Josh and I replaced the deck, and by Thursday, we were done.

The counters in the kitchen fit fine, and I plumbed the sink and finished the touches the next day. It looks good.
Meanwhile, all 3 girls showed up, along with one big boy and two little ones. There is not a moment’s peace with two toddlers underfoot. But once they got put to bed, it was situation normal, and we all got fucked up.

It’s been balls to the wall for so long with the deck and the kitchen  that, when they were suddenly, simultaneously, done, I didn’t quite know what to do with myself.
Long story, but I ended up making a gate next to Juliet’s barn out of boards taken from the old deck. While I was working, a pony snuck up on me and ambled on through to freedom.  He wasn’t about to be rounded up, so I let him eat apple drops on the lawn until Juliet collared him.
